snow dyeing and key rings

DUE TO SUDDEN ILLNESS I WILL NOT BE EXHIBITION OR SELLING WORK AT VIBRANT THIS WEEKEND. My apologies!

I think everyone in Canada will agree that it has been a very long, cold winter.  Spring has finally arrived to even the coldest parts of Canada now and all the snow is gone or melting fast.  MOTHER’S DAY WILL SOON BE UPON US.

Over this past winter I tried again to master the art of snow dyeing.  Ice dyeing is now coming quite easily to me but snow dyeing is another matter!  The effects of snow dyeing on silk are not as easily accomplished as traditional snow dyeing on cotton, for quilters.  Even with the addition of salt, snow tends to melt at the same rate instead of ice that starts to drip at different rates depending on the thickness.  In other words, colours will blend into each other a lot more with snow dyeing and a muddy mess can be difficult to avoid.

I photographed the process in the various stages of development as the snow melted and gave its colour to the silk.  The two scarves pictured as the end result will be for sale at my upcoming show Vibrant, being held in Ottawa on April 26th and 27th and will be the only 2 snow dyed scarves that are available until next year.

Another addition to my line of art will be launched at Vibrant; they are highly decorative key chains that I make from recycled wine corks and beads/charms.  A unique way of carrying keys, these items are made with metal parts that will not rust over time and will be as functional as they are pretty.  A low cost item to consider along with a Mother’s Day gift, these one of a kind key rings are sure to please the mother that has everything.
